LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Sunken Treasure Mission 31130
$27.99
LEGO’s newest 3-in-1 bundles three distinct creative takes on the formula of treasure lost at sea. With a colorful palette and an array of build options, the Sunken Treasure Mission 31130 is another example of LEGO’s Creator line aligning creative and intentional builds with aesthetically pleasing design and presentation. -T42

Distinctions - Lego’s 3-in-1 tagline means that 3 thoughtful ocean related builds can be done with only the pieces from the same set (not synchronously). The cover set, with octopus, safe and submersible, offers a number of moving parts and posable elements that allow for play or display in a number of environments. Tight build techniques ensure that seals for the submersible and design of the octopus’ head feel bespoke and intentional, while not overdoing unique parts that might be too niche for use afterwards. The secondary builds create two other unique iterations of the same concept, with creative use of new, more pastel colored pieces as coral elements for the environment. While much of the piece count does come from 1x1 studs used for the design of the safe and the octopus’ suckers, the sheer number of connectors and diverse pieces will open many doors for creative personal use afterwards.
Criticisms - Lego is always creative with the alternative builds, but there is usually a cost to size or design on the alternatives, particularly the stingray and the submersible for the lobster mission. Both demonstrate thoughtful and creative use of elements, but on the whole much less intentional than the original. It is worth noting, though, that Lego separates elements of the build in its instructions, so those wishing to only build one standout element, like the lobster or the coral piece will find it easy.
-
Distinctions - Lego tolerances are typically of extraordinary quality, with no irregularities to be found across all sets weighed and tested. Newer color elements can also be found in this set, which are, despite their young age, tasteful and well-protected against sun fading or other UV damage. While many posable elements exist, all connectors and designs have a level of build quality that make them stable and durable for play and display.
Criticisms - Printing on the manual has some color choices that are indistinct, as well as instructions with orientation changes that are subtle and similar across separate sides. While all colors are pretty saturated, the dark red used for the vast majority of the creature builds lacks a luster demonstrated by some of the other colors on the same build, particularly when contrasted against them in close proximity. A widening palette for Lego means more great customization choices, but also more opportunities for the spectrum of colors to contrast poorly.
-
Distinctions - Posable design and distinct colors and builds make this set very visually appealing and potentially diverse in display application. Creative build techniques, specifically around the octopus’ head and eyes, as well as smooth fits and alignment in the sub glass and overall shape lend a purposefulness to the design that is visually apparent.
Criticisms - Some contrast and luster issues, as mentioned before. For those looking to display the set with the original pieces, the sub sits flat in only one orientation, so those looking to make a display with just the stock parts may be disappointed.
-
Distinctions - Lego is, as ever, strong in reuse and recyclability. With three different builds included in this particular set, official reuse is even being emphasized. This particular set does not overdo bespoke or limited use special pieces, ensuring that every piece is easily usable with the rest of Lego’s system. Fully plastic designs are easily recyclable if desired, though freedom of Lego assembly allows for continued use in as many contexts as can be conceptualized.
Criticisms - As always, the criticism to be had with Lego products is their plastic base. However, with the 3-in-1 sets in particular, another consideration for the fact that 3 instruction booklets are shipped is a detraction. With Lego offering complex instruction manuals on their website for free, perhaps a transition to a more heavily emphasized digital distribution model would be environmentally beneficial in the long term with paper and ink savings.
-
Distinctions - Hard to find a larger catalogue of products that are still legacy compatible with new sets like this one. With three separate and unique designs included the Sunken Treasure Mission triumphs above competitors that have attempted to tap the Lego modular formula to less success. With better tolerances and an overall more cohesive and accurate design than competitors available on similar retailer shelves.
Criticisms - Lego’s major complaint with aficionados is the gradual price inflation and decrease of set sizes. While other competitors compensate for poorer tolerances and less thoughtful designs with larger size, Lego has maintained quality at the gradual expense of physical footprint and MSRP. This particular set, with its size and piece count, had comparable peers at two-thirds of the price from Lego within the last decade.
